The Rock Master Preamp Pedal is part of Peavey’s Legacy series and recreates the famous Rock Master “Ultra” channel from the early ’90s—basically a high-gain monster tone shrunk into a stompbox.
Core sound
Designed for high-gain rock and metal tones
Tight low end, aggressive mids, and searing lead sustain
Can also clean up surprisingly well thanks to high headroom
More polished and controlled than the gritty Decade pedal
In simple terms:
Decade = raw, lo-fi chaos
Rock Master = tight, focused, high-gain amp tone
️ Controls & features
Pre Gain / Post Gain – dial in distortion vs output level
Bottom / Body / Edge EQ – a more advanced 3-band EQ (not just bass/mid/treble)
Mid Shift switch – scooped or boosted mids (great for metal tones)
Gain switch – jump between rhythm and lead levels
True/Hard bypass with anti-click switching
⚙️ Technology & feel
Uses Peavey TransTube circuitry to mimic tube amp response
Internally boosts voltage (around 30V) for:
More headroom
Better dynamic response
Feels closer to a real amp than most distortion pedals
Character
Very much an “amp in a box” (full preamp section in pedal form)
More modern and precise than vintage-style drives
Great for:
Metal
Hard rock
Shred / lead playing
Use cases
Run into:
FX return of an amp (bypassing its preamp)
A power amp + cab
Audio interface (with cab sim/IR)
Can actually replace an amp’s preamp section entirely
Why people like it
Classic Peavey high-gain tone in a compact format
Extremely flexible EQ (more than most pedals)
Tight, articulate distortion that sits well in a mix
